Christmas is always enjoyable, but with all the excitement, do not forget the main reason we celebrate this holiday.

First Woodstock had a Ruffled Feather, now he is grumbling because he is having a Bad Feather Day.

We were at Gatorland on Friday last week and it was quite winding. Some of their feathers were whipping in the breeze also. I did not see Snoopy there with a can of “Feather Spray”. Those bird just had to preen and get thing straighten out.

Great Blue Heron doesn’t look to happy about the wind.

 

Wind is mentioned over a hundred times in the Bible. Here are two verse that show who is in control of the wind:

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.” (Psalms 1:1-4 KJV)

“And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4:39-41 KJV)

I am sure by now most of the readers here know I am a friend of Woodstock cartoons. A few days ago, he showed up in Heathcliff’s bird bath. [I follow just 5 cartoons via email from ArcaMax.com], and today, Woodstock seems to have been shopping. Maybe he was out shopping the day he landed at Garfield’s.

As Spring comes, the birds start their travel back to their normal habitat. It is amazing how far birds travel in their annual migrations. In Why Get In The Ark When You Can Fly?, the Willow Warbler migrates up to 12,000 km each year. [7,456.45 miles].

The article,  Awaiting A Robin – Dorothy Malcolm, Mrs. Malcolm is waiting for the Robins to stop for a rest in her yard. They will be migrating [traveling] from areas in the south, and going back to their northern homes. The Family Circus today shows the birds resting and eating before they take off again.

Have you been able to go birdwatching, or watch birds outside your window on a windy day?

  • Do they look different?
  • Do they behave differently?
  • How did Woodstock act in the cartoon above?

Birds may be small or large, but most of them do not weigh very much. When it is windy, they can be affected quite a bit. Sometimes they really struggle to fly straight. They may appear to be flying sideways.

Also, many of them get their “feathers ruffled.” That can be a sight to see. We are not talking about when people get their “feathers ruffled.” Watching the birds in wind is probably where that saying came from.

“A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.” (Proverbs 15:1-2 NKJV)

Now this Swan actually had its feathers ruffled because it was upset. They were mowing the grass along the water and it followed the man mowing the grass with this irritated posture.

Woodstock’s Highrise Nest

Woodstock is not the only bird to live in a nest complex. Birds in this area, central Florida, have at least one bird, the Monk Parakeet, or Quaker Parakeet that makes an “apartment” nest.

We used to own two Monk Parakeets, so I was familiar with them when we moved here. In South Florida, where we lived in the past, they were wild there also. In fact, Bandi, our first Monk parakeet had been shot out of the tree next door by teenagers. Some neighbor kids brought her to me and long story short, her wing had to be amputated. So, she never went back to the wild.

Hoppy, our second one, had a broken leg, which our vet fixed up. That is the bandage on his leg. Back to the Highrise.

Then again, maybe Woodstock would like to visit the Montezuma Orpendola and select one of the higher nest apartments.

There are many more examples of how the Lord, in His Wisdom, has given the birds the knowledge to build these nest and also, to know that “community” can aid in their protection.

The book of Ecclesiastes has great words of wisdom from Solomon when he refers to one person, versus two or more:

“There is one alone, without companion: He has neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end to all his labors, Nor is his eye satisfied with riches. But he never asks, “For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?” This also is vanity and a grave misfortune. Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4:8-12 NKJV)

Woodstock really has his issues with trying to be a bird. Then again, Snoopy’s analysis of the adventures of Woodstock can be rather entertaining. Here is the latest from the two.

Partridges are medium-sized non-migratory gamebirds, with a wide native distribution throughout the Old World, including Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa. They are sometimes grouped in the Perdicinae subfamily of the Phasianidae (pheasants, quail, etc.). However, molecular research suggests that partridges are not a distinct taxon within the family Phasianidae, but that some species are closer to the pheasants, while others are closer to the junglefowl. Partridges are also one of our Birds of the Bible. See the Bible Birds – Partridge.

These are medium-sized birds, intermediate between the larger pheasants and the smaller quail. Partridges are native to the grassy steppes of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Nowadays they are often found nesting on agricultural land. They nest on the ground and have a diet consisting of seeds, grapes and insects. Species such as the grey partridge and the red-legged partridge are popular as game birds, and are often reared in captivity and released for the purpose of hunting. For the same reason, they have been introduced into large areas of North America.

A famous reference to the partridge is in the Christmas carol, “The Twelve Days of Christmas”. The first gift listed is “a partridge in a pear tree”, and these words end each verse. Since partridges are unlikely to be seen in pear-trees (they are ground-nesting birds) it has been suggested that the text “a pear tree” is a corruption of the French “une perdrix” [a partridge]. Woodstock’s Hairdo

Today’s Peanut’s cartoon reminds me of the birds we saw at the Jacksonville Zoo recently. It had rained before and it rained while we were visiting.

In Where Am I Found? – Abdim’s Stork, the first photo showed the stork still wet. Dan just showed me his photo of the Stork, which definitely shows a wet bird hairdo.

There were a few others that were not up to their normally sleek appearance.

Another wet avian wonder was the Yellow-billed Stork. He was damp, but not as wet as the Abdim’s Stork.

This is why you see so many birds preening. The Roseate Spoonbill was busy straightening and drying its feathers.

When you go birdwatching, do you get side-tracked by other critters? It is easy to do. Since the Creator, the Lord Jesus Christ created all of them, they are all amazing and enjoyable to examine up close.

So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” (Genesis 1:21-22 NKJV)

Woodstock and Flying

For those of you who do not know about Peanuts, the cartoon character, they feature a dog named Snoopy. Snoopy’s friend is a little yellow bird named Woodstock. Snoopy is the only one who understands what Woodstock says.

While I have been recovering from my surgery, my birdwatching has been only reading about the adventures of Woodstock and Snoopy instead of out birdwatching for real. I have kept a few the adventures of them to share with you all.

The top photo was a shock to Woodstock, and you can see this in – Flying is at least safer for Woodstock

Here are a few more adventures of Woodstock:

Woodstock Shock of No Worms

Woodstock was seeking a worm to eat, but the Lord wants us to seek Him early in the morning, and all day long.

Sometimes were are tempted to do things, but really shouldn’t do it. We really do not want to hurt one another.

The Lord knows that we fail sometimes, but He gives us many 2nd chances.
